Ron McDowell was born in upper New York state but was reared in Cheyenne, Wyoming where his father retired after 20 years of military service. Having come from a family of artists and musicians, McDowell's talent was recognized early in elementary school. His first one-man show at age 15 was a simple affair but stirred his desire to paint seriously.
