She has had over 12 solo exhibitions in museums and galleries in New York; Washington DC; California and Connecticut.  Group exhibitions have included the Societe Nationale des Beaux Arts, Salon des Independents, Mystic Internationals and Invitational, and National Art Club exhibitions to name a few.  Her marines were selected for inclusion in the "Ketterer Marine Exhibition/Auction" in Hamburg.  The exhibition represents 17th - 20th paintings in the marine genre.  Also her works were selected to exhibition in the California Art Club Spring Salon.

Deborah Chapin has been selected a signature/artist member of the following organizations: National Arts Club, exhibiting artist member; Societe Nationale Des Beaux Arts; Artist Fellowship; National Academy of Professional Plein Air Painters.

She has been a leader in the plein-air painting genre and recently founded the Professional Plein-air Painters group.  Her biographies have been included in the Allgemeines Kunstlerlexikon (56 Vol) Dictionary of Artists); Dictionary of Sea Painters, book by Edward Archibald, London; Yacht Portraits, book published by Sheridan Press/Overseas Press, Milan, IT and in the Who's Who in America.  She has written articles for the American Artist Magazine and has been interviewed by US Art and Chesapeake Bay Magazine.

Chapin studied at the National Academy of Design with Raymond Kinstler in a master class, and earlier with Mary Ekroos and Harry Shokler, Vermont serigraph artist.  She apprenticed through critiques of her oils for several years.  She also studied sculpture with Martine Vaugel, who taught at the New York Academy.  It was an exercise and she learned a great deal about the figure but prefers painting to sculpture.

This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Born in Fort Collins, Colorado, in 1954, Deborah Chapin first began exhibiting in November 1982 at the Grand Central Galleries in New York.  Noted as a plein-air painter, and for her marine subjects, Chapin has since that time shown both in the U.S. and internationally, including a show at the Louvre in Paris. Since that time Ms. Chapin's works have been included in more than forty major Museum and Gallery exhibits including the Louvre, Grand Palais in Paris; RJ Schaffer Museum; Colorado Historical Museum; National Arts Club; Ketterer Kunst in Hamburg.  She has authored several books:  Dust On My Shoes and Sun At My Back, 15 Plein Air Painters Discuss Their Work.

Inspired by Impressionist exhibits, she developed an affinity for the French countryside, and spent time in Brittany painting there.  She teaches classes in plein air painting and recently published a handbook the subject.  Chapin holds a B.S. degree (1976) and a graduate studies certificate in French studies (1993).

She describes herself as a naturalist/artist, and attributes her appreciation and respect for nature to her father, who was a forester.  This appreciation of nature, as well as principles of growth, process, and change influenced her to paint en plein air (on site).

Deborah Chapin has been selected a signature artist member of the following organizations: National Arts Club, Society Nationale des Beaux Arts, California Art Club, and the American Society of Marine Artists, among others.  She is also a member of the National Academy of Professional Plein Air Painters.
