Ollie Harrington is recognized as the first African-American cartoonist. As an editorial cartoonist, he was adept at combining comedy and political crusading. Harrington was one of the greatest Black practitioners of the art form, and many consider him to be one of the most powerful of all American cartoonists, regardless of race.
Born in Valhalla, New York, on the 14th of February 1912, he was reared mostly in the South Bronx. He has recalled that he became interested in cartooning as a (showing 500 of 10834 characters). |
