Born in Brooklyn, New York, John Buscema became an illustrator much
influenced by work of his predecessors Norman Rockwell, Robert Fawcett
and Al Dorne. He attended the High School of Music in Brooklyn,
and the Pratt Institute night school for drawing and design.
In 1948, he began working for Marvel comics, then known as Timely
Comics, and stayed a year and a half before going into free-lance
illustration. Because of the shrinking popularity of comic books,
