| Born in Stupava, Slovak Republic, Adolf Benca emigrated to the United States when he was a child. He has studied at Columbia University, Cooper Union, and the University of Bologna, Italy where his specialty was anatomy.
He has had the following fellowships: Art Institute of Chicago Study Grant, Sarah Cooper-Hewitt Prize, French Ministry of Culture Painting Grant, and Polloch-Krasner Foundation Grant.
