Cornelia Quinton was a painter and art administrator and also is known by her maiden name, Cornelia Bentley Sage. A native of Buffalo, New York, she was educated at a private French school and at the Art Students Leagues in Buffalo and New York. She also studied in Paris at the Ecole du Louvre, and then returned to Buffalo where she served from 1910 to 1924 as Director of the Albright-Knox Art Gallery, the first woman director of a major art museum in America.
