| Caroline Durieux, of New Orleans, attended Sophia Newcomb College in her hometown. She went on to study at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, and later worked with Diego Rivera in Mexico. During the 1930s and 1940s, Durieux became a well-known lithographer and social satirist (in the tradition of George Grosz and Honore Daumier) whose sharp eye and graphic line punctured pomposity and exposed human foibles in scenes of Louisiana life. She served as director of the Federal Art Project for (showing 500 of 1598 characters). |
