|  Born in Ireland, John Butler Yeats had an active career in New York City, where he was noted for his portrait painting of well-known persons. Interested in modernism, he was a member of the Society of Independent Artists as well as an Irish organization, the Hibernian Academy.
He was the father of poet William Butler Yeats and Irish painter Jack Butler Yeats.
