| Born at Libau, Latvia, he left Russia for New York in 1889 and apprenticed as a map engraver. He attended Cooper Union and the National Academy of Design under Thomas Eakins. In 1903, he won the first Mooney Traveling Scholarship of the National Academy and traveled internationally from 1904 to 1915. For eight months, he lived in a monastery in Greece and created sculptures. In 1929, he was elected President of the Society of American Painters.
