| Born in Albany, New York, Charles Dix was the son of General John A. Dix. He graduated from Union College at age eighteen and studied painting in New York until the outbreak of the Civil War. From 1857 to 1861, he exhibited at the National Academy of Design.
He was an officer for the duration of the war and immediately afterwards sailed for Europe for art study. An accomplished marine and landscape painter, he died young, at age thirty-three, while working in Rome.
