William Swain - known as the most prolific and sought-after portrait painter of Nantucket, MA -was born in Newburyport, MA on December 27, 1803 and died in Norfolk, VA on February 18, 1847.
In 1824, when Swain was only 21 years of age, he opened his first art studio in Newburyport and searched for commissions in Nantucket, New Bedford, Norfolk, and New York City, places where he could find succe (showing 500 of 3633 characters). |
