| Born in Bath, ME on Feb. 25, 1823. Swasey headed a company of fur traders who made their way across the plains to California in 1845. Shortly after arriving, he was a bookkeeper at Sutter's Fort. He then served under General Frémont during the war with Mexico and rose to the rank of captain. Following the war, he was elected secretary to the San Francisco Town Council and served as the last U.S. Marshal for California prior to its admission into the Union.
