James Brown was born in Los Angeles, California in 1951 and was raised in Southern California, where he attended high school. He received his formal art training from Ecole Suparieure des Beaux Arts, Paris,1973-75; Immaculate Heart College, Hollywood, M.A. in 1975; and Instituto Michelangelo, Firenze, 1979. His work is described as primitive, yet refined and inspired by tribal arts - American Indian, African, Hawaiian.
