Born in Harrodsburg, Kentucky, he studied in Paris with Flameng, Courtois and Laurens. He settled in Cincinnati where he became a renowned portrait painter. He also served as president of the Cincinnati Art Club and was a member of the Duveneck Society. He was also an opera librettist.
