A strong conservationist, Alan Gussow painted landscapes and seascapes that combined realism and abstraction. He was the first official artist for the Cape Cod National Seashore association and chairman of the American Beautiful Fund in the 1970s. From 1956 to 1968, he was a teacher at the Parsons School of Design.
In 1972, his book, A Sense of Place, was published. The work featured reproductions of his paintings and text celebrating the American landscape.
