Known for highly realistic portrait copies of early American leaders, she was the third wife of an English portrait painter, James Sharples and had been her husband's art student in Bath before their marriage.
Because her husband was much older and not careful with money, she recognized early that she might need to support herself some day as an independent widow without much inheritance.
