| Born in Cincinnati, OH in 1818. Martin was painting at age 13 and remained a self-taught artist except for a few lessons from Thomas Sully. He worked in New Orleans in 1839 and NYC in 1847-49. After joining the Gold Rush to California in 1849, he was active in Sacramento and San Francisco. While sketching the miners in the mountains near Onion Valley (15 miles northwest of Downieville), he died of cholera in July 1851. Although he painted Gold Rush genre, portraits, and miniatures, his work (showing 500 of 904 characters). |
