FRANCIS HENRY BACON, 1856-1940, Artist, decorator, archaeologist.

Bacon did very few paintings. His major work was in pen and ink and his writings are profusely illustrated. As a designer he introduced classic elements in his furniture, which was, for the most part, Colonial Revival.

Born in Chicago, first of seven children. Both parents were from the Boston area, descended from early settlers. Father was a Civil Engineer who worked in Indiana, Michigan, Maine and North Carolina.

Married Alice Calvert, 1885, niece of the American Consul at Canakkale, Turkey. Son: Frederick Calvert, 1886-1947.  Member Assos (Turkey) excavation team sponsored by Archeological Institute of America, 1881-3.  Died and is buried in Canakkale, where he retired in 1930. Brother of Henry Bacon, designer of Lincoln Memorial, who was influenced by Francis's classical training.

Education and Training:
M.I.T.: Architecture under W. R. Ware 1874-76. Painting student of Theodore Otto Langerfeldt, 1877; Painting student of Gabriel Max at the Royal Bavarian Academy of Fine Arts, 1878. Employed by McKim, Mead & White, 1879; Herter Brothers, 1879-1881; H. H. Richardson, 1884; A. B. Davenport 1884-1906 as chief designer and vice president; founded Francis H. Bacon Co. (1907-c.1932.)

Architectural League of New York; Boston Society of Architects; Boston Society of Arts and Crafts; Tavern Club, Boston.

Furniture in Major Museums:
New York Metropolitan Museum of Art, American Wing; Chicago Historical Society; Art Institute of Chicago; Boston Museum of Fine Arts; White House; Library of Congress: Declaration of Independence and Constitution of US case, on display from 1922-1952.
