| Henry Barkhaus was born in San Francisco, CA on July 23, 1865. While in high school Barkhaus was artistically inclined. Upon graduation in 1881, he entered the local School of Design as a pupil of Virgil Williams.
He was a talented cartoonist for the Wasp when, at Williams' urging, he decided to further his art studies in Europe. In September 1885 he set out for Munich. Upon arrival, he entered the Royal Academy and studied privately with Toby Rosenthal. Barkhaus had been in Munich one year when he became ill with blood poisoning (or typhoid fever) and died at age 21.
