Born in Nashua, New Hampshire on Jan. 22, 1875, Ernest Batchelder studied at Massachusetts Normal School, Harvard Summer School of Design, and Birmingham (England) School of Arts & Crafts.
After moving to California, he joined the department of arts and crafts at the Throop Polytechnic Institute (Pasadena) in 1902 and for several years taught there during winters and at Handicraft Guild Summer School in Minneapolis where Grant Wood was one of his pupils.
