| David R. Dunham was a talented mid-nineteenth century artist who specialized in engravings. As Sailing Scene demonstrates, he also created a select group of marine paintings that make use of the technical acumen he developed as an engraver. Dunham’s finely detailed portraits of racing ships and yachts draw from the meticulous, graceful style of James Edward Buttersworth (1817-1894), whose paintings of the early steamship era were widely popular and critically acclaimed.
