A painter of miniatures, she also authored several books and created sculptures. Helen Gwendolyn Kelley was born in Columbus, Ohio, on November 10, 1877, and studied at the Academie Julian as well as Academie Colarossi in Paris, France. In 1895, she studied with Louis Gallert and exhibited a drawing at the Paris Salon. She traveled to Rome, Italy, where she was decorated by Queen Margherita of Italy for her miniature paintings.
