| A heraldist and bookplate engraver in New York City from circa 1830-55, Henry Hays was, however, not listed in New York City directories until 1851 when he was first listed as heraldist, and then as painter (1852-53) and then engraver (1856-60).
From 1854 he was in business with his son, Henry Hays, Jr.
