| Helmut Hungerland was born in Kassel, Germany on Sept. 22, 1908. Hungerland studied at the Kassel Art Academy. He immigrated to Los Angeles in 1938 and taught art at UCLA until 1942. After settling in Oakland, he taught at the CCAC (1946-58) and was associate editor of Journal of Aesthetics and Art Criticism. Through teaching, he became interested in the theory and philosophy of art and gave up painting. He was a resident of Oakland until shortly before his death in Bainbridge, WA on Jan. 16, 1999.
