This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Called the "Bluestone Master" because of his bold sculpture carvings, Tomas Penning was born in Glidden, Wisconsin and studied in Duluth, Minnesota, the Art Institute of Chicago and with Alexander Archipenko in Woodstock, New York.

In Woodstock, he and his wife ran the Sawgill Gallery with several other couples.  During the Depression, he designed the craft-training center run by the National Youth Administration, and the Woodstock School of Art was later housed there.

Among his works were religious subjects.  One that became well known is a war commemorative piece, Our Lady of the Hudson in Port Ewen, New York near Kingston.  It is a memorial to people who lost their lives on the inland waterways between New York City and the Great Lakes.  The money for it was raised by longshoremen, tug and barge men and boat builders linked to the waterways.
