Biography from Martin-Zambito Fine Art:
Malcolm Roberts (1913-1990)

Roberts studied at the Chicago Art Institute, the University of Washington and in Europe.  He was credited as Seattle’s first Surrealist and exhibited frequently at the Northwest Annuals at the Seattle Art Museum.

He produced paintings in oil and gouache for the WPA as well as lithographs.  Roberts utilized elements of the northwest landscape in his surreal compositions, especially coast and shoreline related material such as shells, driftwood and beach detritus.

Some of his art reflects his homosexual orientation and he was connected romantically with other male artist’s including Morris Graves and Guy Anderson.  His later work of the 50’s and 60’s turned away from Surrealism and displays the influence of Mark Tobey and Morris Graves although still maintaining homoerotic elements.

Roberts also worked in stage and costume design at the Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle and became a successful interior designer after living briefly in California.

His work is in the collection of the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Seattle Art Museum, the Newark Art Museum, Baltimore Museum of Art, Boise Art Museum, Ball State University Museum, The Art Gallery, University of Maryland, Philadelphia Museum, St. Louis Art Museum and others.

Later in life he destroyed most of his own artwork.
