This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Emma Speed was born in Kentucky, and originally set out to be an artist; she studied in Paris for two years, and also at the Art Students League in New York. She married Henry Aylett Sampson; they moved to Richmond, Virginia. It was there that she began her literary career at the age of 45.

She produced two noted series of books for younger readers, William Green Hill and Miss Minerva. She also worked as a columnist at The Richmond Times Dispatch, and served on the State Board of Motion Picture Censors.
