| | Born in Virginia on March 10, 1883. Shankel was painting as a youngster and remained a self-taught artist. He was a long-time resident of San Francisco before his death in Contra Costa County, CA on Nov. 29, 1969. Primitive in style, his works include florals and landscapes which he copied from postcards.
