Haskell Indian School, 1935
Bacone College, AA, 1938
University of Oklahoma, BFA, 1941, and MFA
1950; mural techniques with Olaf Nordmark
1941-42; graduate work, University of Redlands, Northeastern State University, University of Oklahoma, and University of Tulsa.

Military Service: U.S. Navy, World War II.

Muralist Bacone College, U.S. Post Office, Okemah, Oklahoma
Designed official seal for the annual American Indian Exposition, Anadarko, Oklahoma
Dustjacket cover for "The Cheyenne Way", Karl Llewellyn and Hoebel Adamson, Norman, 1941,
Designed a series of 50 medallions for the Franklin Mint, 1874-75
Instructor and Director, Art Department, Bacone College, 1947 to 1970
Director of Art, 1970-72, and Chairman of the Division of Humanities, 1972-77, Haskell Indian Nations University

Born Darlington, OK, Sept. 8, 1912; died 1996. Painter. Sculptor. Printmaker. Teacher. Also known as Wah-Pah-Nah-Yah or Lightfoot Runner. Native American of the Cheyenne tribe. Attended Haskell Institute, Lawrence in 1935; earned an AA degree from Bacone College in 1938; earned a BFA in 1941 and a MFA in 1950 from University of Oklahoma. Pupil of Olaf Nordmark. Taught at Bacone College and at Haskell. His son, also named W. Richard West, is director of the National Museum of the American Indian in Washington. DC. Award: Philbrook Art Center, 1955.
