The following is submitted by the artist, Clifford W. Satterthwaite as written by Diana Palladino:
Clifford Winson Satterthwaite, was born on April 1, 1934 in
Philadelphia, PA. In 1955 he made the Dean's List upon graduation from the Philadelphia Museum
School of Art. Among his fellow classmates were Robert B. Dance and
Leonard Lehrer. He studied under and was most influenced by his
teachers, Henry C. Pitz, Joseph Krush, Ben Eisenstat, Benton Spruance
and W. Emerton Heitland.
Prior to devoting full time to his painting, he worked for several
printing companies and advertising agencies in and around York, PA. He
also sketched for the The Gazette and Daily, The York Dispatch, and
the York Daily Record. Many pen and ink drawings of his were published
depicting historical and current newsworthy events of the time. One
in particular, is his depiction of the Sputnik event published in the
Gazette and Daily on August 25, 1958 titled Eyes on Sputnik . His numerous paintings of York include such works as Glen Rock Mill,
Aaron Hoffer Farm and Bair’s Mill. All of which are in private
collections. Back of South George Street Firehouse, Bair’s Mill with
Calf, Reynold’s Mill, and a watercolor , York Pennsylvania Railroad
Station, are some of several works that remain in the artist’s private
collection.
While he lived and worked in the York area, Cliff took on many
commissions. One in particular were two murals for the Altland House
in Abbottstown, PA. An 1889 depiction of Centre Square and Altland
House which is still admired by those dining at Altland House today.
The other is a mural of an Early Schoolhouse with Children at Play . Cliff Satterthwaite became a regular fixture in the area as he spent
many hours, days, weeks in front of his easel applying paint to his
canvas on the sidewalks and roadsides of York, Philadelphia and their
surrounding countryside. Passersby would even photograph him as he
worked. Some of these photos were published in the local newspapers
along with a human interest story about Cliff’s artistic talent.
Cliff enjoyed a wonderful 28 years in the York and Philadelphia area.
His eldest brother, Richard Satterthwaite, relocated to Washington, DC
and then to Fredericksburg, VA. Both (the area and his brother)
enticed Cliff with the prospect of capturing for posterity the awe
inspiring buildings, countryside and contemporary events unfolding before his eyes.
In Fredericksburg, Cliff met two of his closest friends, fellow
artists Joseph Bartnikowski (1926-2005) and C. Booth Farcus
(1914-1997.) Bartnikowski was a major influence to technique and
creation of Satterthwaite’s palette knife miniatures for which he is
well known here in Fredericksburg. C. Booth Farcus , a wonderful
watercolor artist, played a major role in Satterthwaite’s life from
1983 until the death of Farcus in 1997, as a friend, a traveling
companion and confidant, entering many art competitions together,
traveling as far as 100 miles away, during what they called “the
season.” Farcus was also known for his holiday cards, each one a
hand painted watercolor of winter scenes and his humorous
characterizations of his friend Cliff, the latter of which never failed
to uplift Cliff’s spirits.
Although Satterthwaite is well known for architectural paintings of
historic buildings, he is also known for his still
life, landscapes, nudes, whimsical bas-reliefs, abstract scenes and
portraits, humorous caricatures and contemporary social events just to
mention a few of his creative endeavors.
Cliff Satterthwaite again became a noteable fixture on the
streets in and around the historic city of Fredericksburg, VA., winning
numerous Best of Show awards throughout the years . The Central Rappahannock Regional
Library in Fredericksburg, has two large
paintings on public donated by the artist, The Outing ( a
portrait of Cliff’s mother, a teacher, on a day trip with her first
class) and Daddy at the Beach (a portrait of Cliff, his father and his
brother Norman).
