| A painter, printmaker and art educator, Matt Phillips was born in
New York City in 1928 and studied at the University of
Chicago (M.A.), Stanford University and the Barnes Foundation.
His preferred painting media were watercolor and oil.
From 1964, he chaired the Art Department at Bard College. He has also authored exhibition catalogues, Maurice Prendergast: The Monotypes, 1967, and Milton Avery: Works on Paper, (1971).
