| John Dirks was born in New York on February 11, 1917. Dirks earned his B.A. degree from Yale University in 1939. After serving in the Army during WWII, he took on book illusration. He is the son of Rudolph Dirks, creator of the comic strip, Katzenjammer Kids. He took over the series from his father in 1958 and continued it until 1979.
