| Stanford Fenelle was born in 1909 in Minneapolis. He studied at both the Minneapolis School of Art (now the Minneapolis College of Art and Design) and the St. Paul School of Art under the painter Cameron Booth.
In addition to managing a commercial lettering shop for five years, Fenelle was an artist in the original WPA art program from 1933 to 1934. In 1935 he was appointed supervisor of both the applied and fine arts projects under the WPA, and supervised the easel project at Walker Art Gallery (now Walker Art Center). Fenelle also taught painting at the St. Paul School of Art.
Fenelle was known for his landscapes, featuring the churches, mills, farms, small towns, and cities of the Midwest, mainly Minnesota. Fenelle is also noted for his advertising work with the Brown and Bigelow Company, painting dogs for their calendars. |
