This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Watercolor artist, Ralph Avery graduated from Rochester Institute of Technology in 1928 and was a faculty member of the department of Applied Art for 25 years. He often painted scenes from the local area-gray, foggy views of the downtown skyline, portraits of elegant old city homes, and abstractions of natural areas from the surrounding landscape.

His most remembered work is a wonderful series of drawings depicting "The statue of Mercury;" (messenger of the god's and the highlight of Rochester New York's skyline) as seen through the artist's eyes. In 1881, this statue was commissioned by William Kimball of Kimball Tobacco Factory.

The series of seven drawings are beautifully conceived, showing great mastery and forcefulness in their execution. There were 700 lithographed copies printed of this collection. All 7 drawings feature this statue, from different vantage points and in various weather moods.
The titles are as follows:
1). Silhouette at Night
2). Guardian of the River
3). A Ladder to the Sky
4).The Company of the Gulls
5). Familiar Landmark
6). Reflections on Spring Day
7). One of theses Winter Days

Avery was also a well-known illustrator, contributing many times to Reader's Digest, as well as other popular magazines.
