This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Son of surrealist painter Matta, Gordon Matta-Clark was part of a generation of modernists in the mid 1960s and early 1970s who experimented with a variety of media. His work focusing on remnants from abandoned buildings combines Minimalism, Conceptual and Performance Art.

Although he died at age 35 from cancer, he gained renown for his architectural projects in which he cut whole sections of floors, ceilings, or roofs to expose the hidden spaces in between. In this way, he made his sculpture of cuttings or sections that highlighted both their original function and the possibilities of modern day interpretation.

He was born in New York City and in 1962, entered the School of Architecture at Cornell University in Ithaca. He also studied poetry for a year at the Sorbonne in Paris and in 1969 moved to New York where he found his chosen subject--abandoned buildings.

In 1977, he received a Guggenheim Fellowship and from 1985 to 1988 was the subject of a retrospective at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago.
