The noted Quaker artist Lucy Dennis Holme was born in 1848 at "Holmeland" in Elsinboro, Salem County, New Jersey to Benjamin and Elizabeth Dennis Holme. She studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts with William Sartain and Thomas Eakins, and is believed to have continued her studies in Paris with Gustave Courtois and Jean Andre Rixens. In 1889-91 she painted the French countryside and traveled to Italy and Holland.
