Artists who painted Hawaii
This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Born in Honolulu, Hawaii, Satoru Abe became a sculptor of mod objects, many of them organic botanical, reflecting his South Sea culture and natural environment.

He attended McKinley High School and took art lessons from Shirley Russell. In 1948, focused more on painting than sculpture, he decided to pursue an art career in New York City and attended the Art Student's League where he studied with George Grosz, Louis Bouche and Jon Carrol. He married a fellow student and returned to Hawaii and came under the influence of Met Isami Doi.

In 1952, he went to Japan and had two one-man shows in Tokyo, returned to Hawaii for a year, and then left for New York again where he joined the Sculpture Center and had one man shows. In 1963, he received a Guggenheim grant, and returned to Hawaii as an artist-in-residence at Waienae High School.
