This biography from the Archives of AskART:
| A wealthy artist, William Allen was a great-grandson of Commodore Cornelius Vanderbilt. He studied at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris for ten years with Jules Lefebvre, Claude Monet, William Bouguereau and Jean-Leon Gerome.
In Europe, he became good friends with William Merritt Chase, and they often painted the same subject matter.
Around 1891, he was in the San Antonio, Texas area, sketching U. S. troops in uniform as the Mission San Jose y San Miguel de Aguayo.
