Biography from Crocker Art Museum Store:
| Painter. Born in Oakland, CA in 1872.
A self-taught painter, Powell exhibited still lifes in the Mechanics Institute in San Francisco in 1890. These paintings are believed to be the first works of a black woman exhibited in California. As well as a painter, she was also a concert pianist. A widow and a close friend of Mammy Pleasant, her married name was Burns. Tuberculosis took her life in Oakland on June 1, 1912.
