| Taro Yashima was born in Nejime, Kagoshima, Japan on September 21, 1908. Yashima (né Jun Atsushi Iwamatsu) enlisted in the U.S. Army when war was declared on Japn. It was at this time that he adopted the pseudonym Taro Yashima. After the war he was granted permanent residence in the U.S. In the 1950s he settled in Los Angeles and opend the Yashima Art Institute. His illustrated books, Crow Boy, Umbrella, and Seashore Story were all Caldecott Honor Books. He died in Los Angeles on June 30, 1994.
