| Richard Rackus was born in Highland Park, Michigan in 1922. Rackus settled in Los Angeles in 1936. He began his art training at the Chouinard Art Institute and continued in France and Italy. Over the years he has been a sketch artist for motion pictures, art director for Mars Publications, and illustrator for the NASA Space Program. After leaving the space program, he moved to Arizona and taught portrait painting at Yavapai College. In 1988 he returned to California and settled in Ojai where he continues to paint plein aire landscapes.
