Matilda Vanderpoel, painter and educator, was born April 20, 1862, near
Haarlemmermeer, the Netherlands, emigrating with her family when she
was a child to America in 1869. She was the sister of John H.
Vanderpoel, who became a nationally known artist and teacher.
Matilda Vanderpoel studied at the School of the Art Institute of
Chicago, Illinois, one of six students graduating in 1891. She
taught at the Art Institute beginning 1909 when her brother was
