A master of the naive folk genre, Valcin was born in Port-au-Prince in 1925, and worked as a tile setter as a young man. His artistic work consists mostly of voodoo scenes and depictions of Haitian country life, distinguished through his meticulous use of color and line, giving his work a strong native rhythm.  He joined the Centre d'Art in 1950, teaching among others, his brother Pierre-Joseph.

Valcin has participated in the most important exhibitions of naïve painting organized by Oto Bihalji-Merlin, in museums of England, Germany, Zagreb and Paris, and those organized by Georges Nader in Caracas, Santo-Domingo and New Jersey.
