Born 1859 in Massachussetts as Alfred O'Connor, his name was changed to Frederick Grant Young, as a result of an adoption and at the age of 19, as recorded in a decree dated May 27, 1878.
Frederick Young was living in Boston as noted in the 1880 census. In 1894 he is listed in the Haverhill, Massachusetts directory with his home city shown as Groveland, Massachusetts and listed as artist. By that time he was also known to have traveled to England and Belgium.
