This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Born in Nevers, France in 1879. Chaponot immigrated to San Francisco in 1889 and studied at the Mark Hopkins Art Institute. After the earthquake of 1906, he worked for American Lithograph in NYC for three years. Returning to San Francisco, he continued as a freelance artist. He had a home across the bay in Piedmont until his death on April 13, 1938.
