| Born in Moscow, Russia on June 23, 1901. Obninsky immigrated to the U.S. in 1920. Settling in NYC, he studied architecture at Columbia University and obtained a degree in 1926. He worked there for the architecture firms McKim, Mead & White and for Charles A. Platt. In 1931 he moved to Los Angeles to work for MGM. As well as cinema work, he also did residential designs for members of the movie colony. Upon moving to San Francisco in 1940, he worked for the U.S. Navy as an architect.
