| Born in Chicago, Illinois on June 1, 1907. After a brief career as a boxer, Waiss worked as an artist for the Rocky Mountain News and Denver Post until the 1930s. A self-taught artist, he then was an animator for Walter Lantz and later an animator on Walt Disney's 1940 classic, Fantasia. He died in Thornton, CO on July 17, 1990.
The following correction was submitted in June of 2006 by Fred G. Waiss, Sr., son of the artist:
George, my father, was born in Chicago, Ill. His father, a medical
doctor, died of a burst appendix when George was age two. His mother later remarried
and moved to Colorado with George and his two older brothers. His mother (Nellie
Redfield Waiss) died when he was 11 and he was taken in by his paternal maiden
aunt, Margaret Waiss.
He married Annette S. Westermann in 1945 while working for
Disney. They had two sons. Annette had lived in Brighton, and they moved back
there in 1966, where George stayed until age and Parkinson's syndrome forced him
to live his last few years in a rest home in Thornton, Co.
