Adrianus Eversen (1818 - Amsterdam, Netherlands - 1897 - Delft, Netherlands)

The artist was born in Amsterdam on 13 January, 1818.  He studied painting under Cornelis de Kruyff and became one of Holland’s most accomplished painters of town views.  His contemporary and fellow student, Cornelis Springer, was an acknowledged master of the townscape of this period as well.

??Eversen lived and worked in Amsterdam, exhibiting there between 1840 and 1885.  He also exhibited in The Hague and Leeuwarden before moving to Rotterdam in 1889.  He was highly regarded during his lifetime and sold many paintings in Belgium and the United Kingdom as well as in Holland. (The English collector John Sheepshanks, whose collection was left to the Victoria and Albert Museum, bought his works). ??

Adrianus Eversen was a member of the elite association of artists, still existent today, known as Arti et Amicitiae.  His works are detailed topographical paintings which are interesting from both an artistic and historical point of view.  He depicts figures from all walks of life going about their daily business in the towns of Holland, much as townscape artists of the 17th century had done – but his paintings are also a sensitive and enlightening record of the life of the times.

He died in Delft on 1 December, 1897.
