This biography from the Archives of AskART:

The following was submitted by the artist:

Raffi was born in the United States of Armenian parentage in 1928.  His father L. Yacoubian was an artist and illustrator born in Armenia and received his training in Paris.
Young Raffi grew up in San Francisco and at age eleven worked under Diego Rivera at the San Francisco World's Fair during school vacations in 1939 and 1940.  Two years later he studied art under Abel Warshawsky at his studio in Carmel.  He also studied under Manuel Tolegian for many years who was a student of Tom Benton.  In addition he studied drawing in several art schools including the Calif, School of Fine Art, the Kahn Institute, etc.
He had one-man shows in San Francisco and Los Angeles and Palm Springs.  He also participated in group-showings.  His paintings are in many homes throughout the country.
His style is somewhat impressionistic and colorful but also adheres to academic guidelines. The subject material consists of human studies and street scenes.  While the bulk of his work centers around life in California, he has also produced paintings of Russia, Armenia and Paris.
He resides in Southern California with his wife Sheila. As always his brush is active.
