| Marmaduke Matthews (b.1837 / d.1913)
Marmaduke Mathews was born in 1837 in Borchester, England.
Mathews first studied art Cowley Diocesan in Oxford. He continued his education at London University Marnaduke. Mathews was a scholar studying under many London art masters and under the tutelage of T.M. Richardson while at Oxford.
Mathews settled in Toronto, Ontario, Canada beginning in 1860. He lived in Canada for five years before moving to New York from 1865 through 1869. Mathews was continually traveling. His journeys included 1887 to 1899, in British Columbia; Vermont and New Hampshire.
In 1887, Mathews was granted a C.P.R., as well known artists as Railway Painters for Canada, Mathews made his first excursion with Lucius O’Brien, F.M Bell Smith, T. Mower-Martin and F. Day to the Rocky Mountains. This excursion was to record the completion of the railway in the Rocky Mountains.
Mathews was a founding member of Ontario Society Of Arts that began in 1872. Mathews also served as Vise-President and President and Secretary. In the Royal Canadian Academy (R.C.A.), Mathews was an active member.
In the autumn of 1913, in Toronto, Ontario, Mathews passed away.
